Windows 8 is a new operating system released on October 26, 2012 by Microsoft. Windows 8 was focused on improving its users experience on mobile devices such as tablets. It introduces a new start up menu with a grid of dynamically updating tiles that represent applications. It also features a new app platform with an emphasis on touchscreen input. It has a faster startup through UEFI and “Hybrid boot” which hibernates the Windows kernel on shutdown to speed up the subsequent boot. Windows explorer was renamed to file explorer that now includes a ribbon (an interface where a set of toolbars are placed on tabs in a tab bar) in place of the command bar, task manager was also redesigned. Additionally, the Blue Screen of Death has been updated with a simpler and modern design with less technical information displayed.
Windows 8 features a secure boot which uses a public-key infrastructure to verify the integrity of the operating system and prevent unauthorized programs such as bootkits from infecting the device.
Aside from removing the start menu, playing DVD in windows media player has also been removed due to the cost of licensing the necessary decoders. Windows media center will also not be included by default Windows 8 but can be added back through “Pro Pack” base version of Windows 8.
